Per Scholas and Barclays attended the White House’s My Brother’s Keeper What Works Showcase in Washington D.C., highlighting our partnership’s mission to provide tuition-free technology skills training and professional development to un- or underemployed individuals.
My Brother’s Keeper is an initiative launched by President Obama aimed to “address persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color and ensure that all young people can reach their full potential.”
The showcase highlighted 30 providers who have demonstrated “rigorous evidence of impact” and at Per Scholas measuring impact is taken very seriously. Their programs have trained 6000 individuals since 1995. 80% of graduates land jobs and 75% of them retain their employment for at least one year. Per Scholas expects to train an additional 550 New Yorkers next year.
Attending the event was Per Scholas’ CEO Plinio Ayala, Barclays’ Wayne Kunow, Global Head of Information Risk Management and Jonathan Peña, a Per Scholas graduate and Information Risk Manager at Barclays. In the video above, Jonathan describes his journey through the Per Scholas program to a job within Barclays’ Technology group.
Barclays has supported Per Scholas’ employment initiatives since 2012. More than 500 Barclays employees have volunteered with Per Scholas in a variety of ways including hosting large-scale mock interview events and serving as mentors through Per Scholas’ Women in Tech program. Barclays has also hired 12 Per Scholas graduates for full-time careers with our Operations & Technology function.
