This is the second time in the last four years that the firm has won the Western Europe accolade, including Italy, Germany, France and Spain, and the seventh time in the last eight years that Barclays has taken the UK award.
“This year the UK’s best investment bank remains Barclays,” says Euromoney. “This is a firm that takes on the biggest and best in investment banking globally, making it a clear leader not just in the UK but across Europe. It has hit its cost targets, while revenues rose ahead even of US peers, boosting profits in a year when the industry has struggled.”
Alisdair Gayne, Head of UK Investment Banking, says: “We have a great story to tell. Despite a challenging market environment, we have completed more deals in the UK than any other bank this year. It is a testament to the strength of our platform that in these challenging times clients are increasingly turning to us to help them execute their strategic transactions.”
Reflecting on the success of the firm’s European business, Euromoney commented: “There are still a few European banks giving the US banks a run for their money, especially Barclays, western Europe’s best investment bank… Barclays’ unusually strong position in the US market is a crucial part of its viability as a global competitor to the Americans in Europe as it is better able to bring European stories to US institutional investors. Its London base and UK commercial network make it hard to beat in Europe’s biggest investment banking market.
