Barclays team members have been running, climbing, and ski-touring across the world, all in support of The Brain Tumour Charity’s Everest in the Alps challenge.

When Toby Ritchie was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2012, his father Rob wanted to do something to help other people dealing with illnesses like Toby's. He got in touch with The Brain Tumour Charity and the Everest in the Alps challenge was born.

The first Everest in the Alps raised over £3 million for The Brain Tumour Charity, which helped to fund The Everest Centre, a groundbreaking research institute. For 2018, Everest in the Alps is going to be even bigger.

This year seven teams will be taking on the challenge, including Team Barclays, made up of Mark Lewellen, Co-Head of Global Debt Capital Markets and Risk Solutions, Thomas Flichy, Head of Capital Products & Advisory, Harry Koppel, EMEA and LatAm SSAR DCM, and Barclays’ client Alison Dolan, Chief Strategy Officer of News UK.

Mark, Thomas, Harry and Alison are all keen athletes, and have run marathons and scaled mountains before, but Mark has said ‘this will test our endurance beyond anything we’ve ever known’. With matched funding from Barclays, the team is aiming to raise £50,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity.

Training has been intense, including practicing ski-touring in the Alps, going for weekend and evening runs together and even working out at gyms in financial centres all over the world as they travel for work. The team also organised a kick off fundraising event in Canary wharf that involved over 40 Barclays colleagues climbing the height of Everest on vertical climbing machines in support of the team and the cause.

Everest in the Alps

During the actual challenge, Mark, Thomas, Harry and Alison will spur each other on as they spend four days straight ski-touring in the Alps to reach their goal of climbing 8,900 metres. They’ll also be supported along the way by five wounded veterans from Adaptive Grand Slam, who will be helping guide all the teams on their ascent.

Barclays is a big supporter of the Armed Forces, and the team hopes their expedition through the Alps will increase awareness for important Armed Forces programmes like Adaptive Grand Slam and Barclays’ own AFTER initiative as well as raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity.

We’ll keep you updated here with information about Everest in the Alps and Team Barclays’ progress as they take on this epic challenge. In the meantime, you can find out more about Everest in the Alps on the challenge's website.
