The New York committee of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an office within the US Department of Defense, recently presented Barclays with its top award.

The Pro Patria Award recognizes Barclays for supporting employees who are members of the National Guard or Reserve, specifically by implementing an industry-leading Military Leave policy and driving a culture that honors military service. The firm’s new policy ensures that eligible employees who are called to active duty military service receive the equivalent of their Barclays salary and benefits for up to five years of active service, which is five times the legal minimum of one year.

This award speaks not only to Barclays’ strong framework of policies and benefits, but also to the genuine commitment by employees at all levels of the organization to making Barclays a great place to work for service members.
Joyce Curran, ESGR Public Affairs Director

"All of us at Barclays continually challenge ourselves to do more to support veterans and active duty military personnel inside and outside our firm," said Tom McGuire, Americas Treasurer and co-chair of the Barclays Military Services Network, accepting the award on Barclays' behalf. "We are committed to working with organizations like ESGR to make Barclays an even better place to work for service men and women."

In his remarks, Tom shared the story of Bryon Linnehan, a Vice President in Compliance who is also a Major in the New York Army National Guard’s 369th Special Troops Battalion – the "Harlem Hellfighters." Barclays took the opportunity to enhance its Military Leave policy after Bryon was unexpectedly called up to serve approximately nine months in the Middle East in 2016.

The Pro Patria award is Barclays' seventh award from ESGR. Previous honors include four Patriot Awards, given to managers nominated by their employees in the Guard or Reserve, and the Above and Beyond and Seven Seals Awards.
