Barclays once again secured the title of #1 Corporate Team and #1 Overall Fundraising Team at the annual Bike MS Awards Ceremony. The award recognises the firm’s support for the Bike MS ride, which took place in New York City in October 2015 and raises funds to fight Multiple Sclerosis.

Our colleagues have been supporting and participating in Bike MS events for over a decade. 2015 marked the fourth year in a row that Barclays has earned the distinction of being top corporate fundraiser. In the last ten years, the team has raised over US$2MM through Bike MS for the National MS Society.

As a united and growing force, our team has been able to increase awareness and raise money for a great cause, along with delivering on Barclays’ overall citizenship agenda. We wear our Barclays jerseys and bike shorts with pride, and ride to find a cure with excitement and great determination.

The annual ride offers cyclists a traffic-free 30 mile route circling Manhattan or more challenging courses that take cyclists through the Holland Tunnel into New Jersey for a total of 50 or 100 miles. Through their efforts, the team collected over US$145K this year, an 11% increase on last year's team fundraising total. Notably, 32 of the 65 team riders received special distinction as ‘Elite 200’, which recognizes the top 200 individual fundraisers overall.

Where does the money go?

The National MS Society has a bold vision: a world free of MS. Below are some examples of how Barclays fundraising dollars will help work toward that goal:

$50 could provide round-trip transportation to a medical appointment
$100 could help purchase a walker or shower chair
$250 could fund a transport chair, accessible transportation to a medical appointment, or a portable ramp
$500 could help fund a college scholarship for a high school senior who is living with MS or whose parent is living with MS
$1,000 could pay for a hospital bed, half of a standard chair lift, or utility or rental assistance to two people living with MS
$43,000 could fund a research grant (average cost)
